Kevin Garnett hit a big shot at the buzzer to lift the Celtics over the Knicks 107-105 in OT on Sunday. A win is a win but the Celtics should not feel good about this one.

The Boston Celtics may have beaten the New York Knicks on the road on Sunday, but it took overtime and a heroic buzzer beater from Kevin Garnett to do it.

Great shot by KG. Another big time basket for the big fella. But you’ll excuse the Celtics if they are not celebrating the victory over the New York Knicks.

Yes, these are the same 3-10 Knicks who played so badly on Saturday that Nate Robinson shot on his own hoop. The Knicks who know the only thing they might win this year is the NBA lottery. And these are the Celtics who, as Pierce put it, think they are predestined to be Champs.

For now, it is a Boston victory. But more must be done if Boston wants to win it all.

The Atlanta Hawks swept the season series with Portland on Monday. Add quality wins against Boston & Denver, and the 9-2 Hawks may need to be take seriously.

The Atlanta Hawks beat the Portland Trailblazers on Monday night, halting Portland’s 6-game winning streak and sweeping the season series. With quality wins against Boston & Denver and a 9-2 record, it may be time to take these high-flying Hawks seriously.

The Hawks needed a 35 point effort from Joe Johnson & a 20 point and 16 rebound performance from Josh Smith to overcome the stubborn, division-leading Trailblazers 99-95 in overtime in Atlanta on Monday night. It’s beginning to look like the Hawks have the makings of a true winner for the first time since Dominique challenged Bird in the mid 1980s.

Save a road loss to the Lakers and an embarrassing gaffe against at Charlotte, the Hawks have taken care of business this year. They are undefeated at home (5-0) and managed and impressive road record of 4-2, including a win at Boston. But how are they doing it? Is it smoke and mirrors, lucky breaks, or are they legitimate contenders in the East?

The success of the Hawks can partly be attributed to three things:

A Rejuvenated Josh Smith
Josh Smith has shrugged off a disappointing 2008 campaign and returned with style. Maybe he was worried about his contract extension but that has long been put to bed. J-Smoove is averaging career highs in rebounds (8.9), assists (3.9), and most importantly field goal percentage (58.6%) — while maintaining his stellar defensive averages of 1.7 steals and 2.7 blocks. Credit shot selection for helping Smith turn around his performance, as he has yet to attempt a three pointer this year. But when you combine his defensive efforts with a suddenly-experienced Al Horford, Atlanta seems to have an answer to the “where’s the beef?” question.

An Upgraded Bench
The off-season acquisition of veteran gunner Jamal Crawford has added a dominating scoring threat to the sometimes-challenged Atlanta offense. Never shy with the ball in his hands, Crawford has been averaging almost 17 points a night. In addition, he takes pressure of of Joe Johnson & Mike Bibby, as he can bring the ball up the court and backup either guard position. His outside shooting threat has also opened up the spacing, allowing big men Horford and Smith more room to operate down low. Finally, doubling Joe Joe is no longer an option when Crawford plays the third guard. Just too many weapons. Throw in the veteran rebounding and leadership presence of one-time #1 pick, Joe Smith, and Atlanta is far better off when they go to the bench than in years past.

A Sense of Purpose
Mike Woodson will tell you that the playoff victory in the opening round series against Miami last year has changed this team. It was a successful step up from the contentious 7-game loss to the Boston Celtics the year before. Looking at the mentality of the Hawks this year, you’d be hard pressed to argue otherwise. The Hawks have a swagger about them that I haven’t seen since Doc Rivers was running the point. They expect to win. The young nucleus of Marvin Williams, Al Horford, and Josh Smith have grown up. Joe Johnson is in the final year of his contract and continues to play at an NBA All-Star level. And Mike Bibby is facilitating all the action and is still deadly from the outside. Big wins against Boston, Denver, and Portland, and smackdowns of lowly opponents are giving this team real confidence.

The Hawks have yet to play Orlando and will be tested when they meet Miami for the first time later this week. But for now, these birds are flying high and atop the Southeast Division. If they continue to play like they have the last two weeks, expect them to stay there.

Be careful what you wish for, Stephen Jackson. Sometimes wishes do come true. Captain Jack got shipped to Charlotte for the equivalent of return bus fare.

Stephen Jackson had been demanding a trade since before the season started. His falling out with Don Nelson was well publicized in the days leading up to the season. Nelson even suspended him for 2 days for “conduct detrimental to the team.”

Despite leading the Golden State Warriors in points, assists, steals, threes and undoubtedly field goal attempts last year, the 10 year veteran got his wish and was drop-shipped to the Charlotte Bobcats (along with the disappointing Acie Law IV) for veteran shooting guard Raja Bell and forward Vladimir Radmanovic. The Bobcats are one of the worst offenses teams in the league and run the “slow it down,” Larry Brown offense that will challenge Jackson’s itchy trigger finger.

The trade looks like both teams had no other options and decided to move some cap space around. Golden State is giving away by far the most complete — albeit incredibly selfish — player in Jackson only to get guys that have no long-term future or upside. You could argue that this is the right thing for these organizations to do for this year: Jackson give a much-needed scoring presence to a flailing Bobcat offense; the Warriors get “addition by subtraction” removing a locker room cancer and freeing up space on their untested but talented roster. But you can bet by next season that none of the players in this trade will have any impact on either team.

Jackson said he wanted out of Golden State. He got his wish. But when February rolls around and he is no closer to the playoffs than he was at Golden State, I wonder if he will regret his decision.

Dunking is almost entirely dependent on your vertical leap. If you can increase your vertical, you have a better chance to throw down at the rim.

Part of jumping higher involves building up your leg muscles. Plyometrics (exercising design to mimic game-time jumping) can be very effective in building muscles. Additionally, technique is important. Visualizing yourself jumping higher can often add a few inches, as can swinging your arms upward.

LeBron & Wade are the current and future stars of the NBA. They showed the rest of the league why when they clashed in Miami on Thursday.

A much anticipated, star-studded clash took place in the NBA on Thursday as LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers visited Dwyane Wade and the Miami Heat. When you look to star power in the NBA, few shine as bright as LeBron and Wade. They are the #1 & #2 centerpieces of a dynamite 2010 free agency class. Friends off the court, and respectful adversaries on the court, LeBron & Wade have even mused about playing together one day — though desired salaries and existing cap space will make that likely impossible.

“I like playing against LeBron more than anybody else in the league,” Wade said. “He brings out the best in me, and I bring out the best in him.”

The All-Star duel took place amid speculation James and Wade might become teammates next season.

“We knew because of D-Wade it was going to be a high-energy game,” said the Cavs’ Shaquille O’Neal, who scored 14 points in a return to his former home court. “It’s very, very exciting watching him and LeBron going back and forth.”

Source: Yahoo! Sports

But the real action occurred after tip off. Both players carried their teams: LeBron 34 points, 4 rebounds, 7 assists; Wade 35 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists. The Cavaliers took control late in the 4th quarter but a surge by Wade drew them to within 4 with just three minutes left. It was critical free throw shooting down the stretch by LeBron, a past deficiency in an otherwise impeccable portfolio, that carried Cleveland to a 111-104 victory.

Here’s looking forward to the next battle.

Arenas was two assists shy of a triple double in loss to Miami — but only if you count turnovers! His 12 turnovers were the most in the NBA since Wade in 2007.

You can blame injuries to All-Stars like Jamison for the Wizards’ slow start, but on Tuesday night, it all came down to Gilbert Arenas and his inability to hold onto the ball!

As Yahoo! Sports reports:

For Gilbert Arenas, it was a night to forget.

He led the Wizards with 21 points, but most notably, had a career-high 12 turnovers—seven of the giveaways coming in a 6-minute span of the third quarter, and not coincidentally, that was the stretch where Miami erased an 11-point deficit and turned things around with a 16-3 run.

“It’s the same thing every game,” Arenas said. “We go into that third quarter where we can’t score, we can’t pass, we can’t catch, we can’t think.”

He was the first NBA player with that many turnovers since Feb. 1, 2007— when Wade did it against Cleveland.

The unfortunate turnover bug that bit and severely wounded Agent Zero put the Wizards out of contention, as the Wizards lost to the Miami Heat for a second time in a week.

Good news? It is unlikely that Agent Zero will post that many turnovers in another game this year. Bad news? His shot has still not come around. Despite averaging more than 20 points per game, Arenas is only 41% from the field.

There may be 10 guys on the NBA court, but sometimes it is man v. man. Wade & Arenas did battle on Wednesday night with Wade’s 40 trumping Arenas’ 32.

If there was any question as to whether Arenas has his game back, it was answered with a definite YES on Wednesday night. Arenas did battle with Dwyane Wade and their showdown was must-see-tv. But it was Dwyane Wade, who had an MVP-level season last year, who came out on top.

Wade outdueled Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas, who scored 32, in a game that was deadlocked down the stretch until the final minute. With the game tied at 89 and a minute left, Wade made plays when he needed to and Arenas couldn’t answer. Source: Yahoo! Sports

Expect more great match-ups like this as the NBA season wears on. If Washington is going to make any noise in the NBA, they need Agent Zero at his absolute best. Though the supporting cast of Butler, Miller, & Haywood are chipping in admirably, it is up to Gilbert to keep the ship afloat until Jamison returns.

As for the Heat, maybe no team relies more on one player than Miami relies on Wade. You could argue the same maybe of Chris Paul in New Orleans, but the fact remains that this is Wade’s team. If he plays well, Miami is good. If not, the rest of their talent couldn’t win 30 games.

Once left for dead, J.J. Redick reappeared on Sunday to help lead the Orlando Magic over the Toronto Raptors.

J.J. Redick may have been the best college shooter of his generation, though Stephen Curry might argue with that. Regardless, his pro career has not lived up to his billing while at Duke.

In three NBA seasons, J.J. Redick has average 14 minutes per game and 5.6 points, hardly what you would expect from a two-time college All-American. But an injury to Vince Carter allowed Redick to start against Toronto on Sunday. And he took advantage with a career high 27 points, on 8-14 shooting from the field, 5-8 from 3 point land.

The match-up against the Toronto Raptors worked in Redick’s favor, as there defense philosophy is “a good offense is the best defense.” But still, it is an encouraging sign for a disappointing draft pick who has been buried deep on the Orlando Magic roster. With off-season additions of outside shooting threats Vince Carter a Matt Barnes, you’d figure even less time would be available for Redick.

Though one game does not make a season, it is encouraging to know that when his number is called, J.J. can deliver…at least for now.

Any idea who is leading the NBA in made 3 pointers? Raise your hand if you’ve never heard of Danilo Gallinari…because he is the next pure shooter in the NBA.

Though it is dangerous to extrapolate small numbers into large numbers, it is impossible to ignore what is happening at Madison Square Garden. There in the bright lights of New York City, a 21-year old, 6 foot 10 inch Italian is putting on a show like we haven’t seen in some time. The 6th pick in the 2008 draft by the Knicks, Danilo Gallinari did very little his rookie season.

With Mike D’Antoni firmly in control, and with an extra year under his belt, Danilo has been unchained and he is firing away from 3 point land. In three games he has 18 3 pointer. Not attempts, but 18 made 3 pointers…and shooting at a better than 50% clip from downtown. Some guys might have suspected that this kid could play, but no one could have foreseen the volume and efficiency with which the Italian Assassin could stroke the ball.

No doubt the second year player will find it hard to keep up such a pace, but given the volume of shots available in the Knick offense, and his recent insertion into the starting lineup, this could be a sign of things to come. Even the return of little Nate won’t take the ball out of his hands.

Most basketball players are either long gone from the NBA or buried deep on someone’s bench at 35 years of age. But Steve Nash is showing that his skills are far from gone.

Steve Nash took his time opening night, scoring 15 points of his 24 points in the final quarter leading the Phoenix Suns to an opening night win of the Golden State Warriors. He followed this up with an eye-popping 20 assists in a romp over the Golden Warriors. Is Nash’s performance a mirage in the desert? Is it simply what good point guards do against two lowly Western Conference opponents? Or is this a wake-up call to the rest of the NBA that Nash & the Suns are back?

The Terry Porter experiment was a disaster. The Shaq trade did nothing but relegate the Suns to an also-ran team. Steve Kerr has two strikes. One more and he is out! Returning to the “7 Seconds or Less” philosophy that propelled the Suns to one of the elite teams in the NBA seems to have also woken up Nash.

Amare Stoudemire is back and Jason Richardson returns from suspension soon. Channing Frye mans the post last held by Shaq. Though certainly a downgrade on defense and low-post offense, Channing allows this team to run at max speed. The Brazilian Blur, Leandro Barbosa, is poised to wipe away last year’s disappointing season and return to his fast break ways.

The West has not been one with two wins against bad opponents. But the future looks a lot brighter in Phoenix, for as long as Steve Nash is healthy.

Is Agent Zero back? This first game of the 2009-10 season would suggest that we may be seeing a renewed, rejuvenated, All-Star level Gilbert Arenas.

Gilbert Arenas scored 29 points in the Washington Wizard’s debut game of the new NBA season. But more importantly, he led one of the worst teams in the league last year (19-63) to a victory over the restocked Dallas Mavericks. Beating a Western Division contender may just be the start for these Wizards.

Scoring has always come easily to Gil. Maybe that’s because he shoots as much as anyone in the league. But digging into the stats, Gil is at his best, and so are the Wizards, when he is dishing the ball. His 9 assists against the Mavs shows that he might be putting the team goals in front of his own. No longer playing for a contract — he’s already got a massive $100m plus deal — Gilbert knows that it is time to win.

Desperate to get to the winning ways of 3 seasons ago, when the ritual was to get ousted in the playoffs every year by LeBron, the Wizards made a slew of off-season moves. An injury to top forward, Antawn Jamison, will slow their progress but it could also accelerate the playing time of new pieces (Foye, Miller, Oberto) and existing talent (Blatche). The return of a stable center in Haywood and a healthy All-Star in Bulter should keep the Wizards sailing.

It appears that Agent Zero has decided to let his basketball do the talking this year. At least for now!

The much-anticipated debut pairing of LeBron & Shaq had fans in Cleveland thinking NBA Championship. But the veteran-laden Celtics team had other plans, winning the first contest between two of the Eastern powers 95-89.

The story in this game was one of balance, or lack thereof. The Cavaliers have 2 superstars — LeBron & Shaq — and then a bunch of decent players. I know, Mo Williams was an All-Star last year, but I would take Rajon Rondo over him any day of the week. Troubled wing player, Delonte West, is sorely missed for his on-ball defense and outside shooting. The new energy guy, Jamario Moon, has yet to takeoff, and Anthony Parker was more or less held in check. The Celtics, however, have quality at every position. The Big 3 might be the Big 4 with the addition of Rasheed Wallace…and I think Rondo deserves a ton of credit for driving this offense. If it weren’t for a dumb decision by Big Baby Davis, this team would be stacked.

LeBron James did little to quiet any talk of a second straight MVP, as his stat line looked like an all-you-can-eat buffet at Morrison’s cafeteria: 38 pts, 4 3s, 4 rebs, 8 asts, 2 stls, 4 blks. Shaq did his part but was not as effective in the low post as you would like. But it was Paul Pierce down the stretch that kept hitting big shot after big shot. He paced the Celtics with 23 pts & 11 rebs.

It may have only been the first game of the NBA season, but the Celtics getting a victory in Cleveland sent a clear message to the rest of the league: we are back!

Program Details

The Jump Manual packs a punch. While some other vertical jump programs I have reviewed target general sports, The Jump Manual concentrates on basketball. As you know, if you want to play better basketball you need to increase your vertical. Jacob Hiller has taken thousands of people through his jump techniques and training regimen.

The Jump Manual is mostly an eBook, though there are other materials included. Once you purchase The Jump Manual, you will receive an email with download instructions. The downloaded file is an eBook application that can be run on your PC. The first few chapters of the book concentrate on the mechanics of jumping and why most people fail to achieve results when working out. Videos are combined with text to drive home the points.

Post workout techniques for recovery and the proper diet are also significant sections. Jacob has certainly thought about the total day-to-day routine of jumpers and has not left anything out. He gives advice on what to do while “in training” and “not training.” The jumping workout program is varied by day for 14 days. A different set of exercises are performed during each of the 14 days so the vertical jump program doesn’t get stale. Some of the routines involve weights but you can perform most of them without weights.

The major value of the jump product is, not surprisingly, the training. There are strength exercises, plyometrics, stretching exercises, and quickness drills designed to give you max explosion. But the “secret formula” is not in the exercises — some are new, some are familiar — but rather in how The Jump Manual has you perform these exercises. I could see immediately why I hadn’t been gaining inches from my old workout — I was doing the exercises incorrectly. By combining these jump exercises with your basketball drills, you will see an improvement.

My Jump Manual review wouldn’t be complete without talking about the bonuses included in the program. You get two really valuable bonuses, which I found fascinating. And anyone who struggles when the pressure heats up would do well to listen to the Peak Performance interview. And hearing how Coach Dave Hopla regularly shoots 99% was both unbelievable and inspiring. I plan to incorporate this into my basketball workouts, along with my jump program. But a tremendous source of value is in the free one-on-one coaching. You can catch Jacob on skype or email him directly if you have questions. The majority of vertical jump programs, even those more expensive, don’t provide support like this.

>>> Get More Details On The Jump Manual By Clicking Here <<<

There were some drawbacks to the program. Because it is an application and not a PDF, printing was difficult. I wish there could have been some better workout charts and “tear away” sheets to chart my progress.

Bottom line is that this is a superb training tool to increase your basketball vertical. With the iron-clad, 60-day guarantee there is no downside. I have reviewed a number of internet jump programs. My opinion is that you will jump higher with The Jump manual. It won’t surprise you that the reason why I would recommend The Jump Manual to anyone is because when I used it, I gained 6 inches in just three weeks. It is definitely worth the price of admission.

Carmelo Anthony is feeling good where he is, in the crisp, clean Rocky Mountain Air. After reaching the NBA West Finals, do the Nuggets have a chance at the ultimate prize?

Melo is happy to have signed a longer contract. He is the only one of the his high-profile draft brethren to do so as LeBron, Wade, and Bosh are all waiting for 2010 free agency. As Yahoo! Sports reports, it made a lot of sense for Carmelo at the time:

Given Anthony’s poor upbringing in Baltimore, his mother, Mary, told her son she didn’t like the idea of leaving nearly $36 million on the table by opting for a shorter contract. Anthony listened and agreed to a four-year deal with an option for a fifth season that totaled $80 million, allowing him to possibly put off free agency until 2012.

Now you’ve got Melo and a stable situation: a top-tier leader at point guard in Chauncey Billups, a somewhat vindicated George Karl at coach, and successful rehabs/rejuvenations/reincarnations Kenyon Martin, Nene Hilario, and Chris Anderson. Factor in a more mature J.R. Smith (he says jail changed him) and you have a pretty solid staring rotation. Anthony must also know that success begets success. Getting to the Western Conference Finals should add confidence to this crew.

So is the sun shining in Denver?

Maybe, but some of the best of the West have gotten stronger (Lakers, Spurs, Mavs), while you could argue that the bench of the Nuggets is one of the worst in the NBA. Linas Kleiza is not often found in many sports columns, but he is a good NBA player. His exodus to Europe leaves a big gap given the swiss-army array of skills he had.

For the Nuggets to be successful, Carmelo has to better develop his overall game. He showed great leaps in the playoffs by playing much better defense. We all know he can score so the deciding factor will be how he gets the other guys involved. This team is run by Billups, but it will win and lose by the play of Carmelo.

Paul Pierce’s nickname is “The Truth”. But can you believe him when he says the Celtics are going to win the NBA title this year?

Here is what Paul Pierce had to say as reported by Yahoo! Sports:

“Before the season even started last year, I was asked, ‘What is going to stop y’all from winning it all?’ ” Pierce said in a phone interview on Thursday. “The first thing I said was, ‘If we’re healthy, we’re going to win it all.’ And I’m going to say it again: ‘If we are healthy, we are going to win it all.’

Looking at their roster top to bottom, it is hard to find any team in the NBA packed with this much talent. Despite losing a hugely undervalued piece in Leon Powe to the Cavs, the addition of Rasheed Wallace makes the Celtics a better team. Also, factor in the ascendancy of Rajon Rondo and the Big Baby Davis, coupled with the Big 3 All-Stars of Pierce, Garnett, and Allen, and you have to think they are the odds on favorites to win.

Garnett is the key to the Celtics. If he is playing their defense reaches another level. Rondo is the glue. He must play well for this team to function. And Rasheed is the x-factor here. He is one of the most difficult match-ups in the game, when he is on. He should owe Detroit money for the lackluster performance he had last year. But with the smell of another ring filling the air in Boston, I expect the best from him.

Despite all of the above, I actually don’t see them winning. Though I’ve been wrong before (Pistons against Lakers), I think age will catch up to the Celtics this year. Look at what has happened to San Antonio in the last 2 years. From on top to simply a playoff team. Injuries and exhaustion down the stretch reduced the champs to a difficult out, not an unstoppable force. The Spurs did a mini youth movement this summer knowing their window is closing fast. You can praise Danny Ainge for also trying to maximize his time. The Celtics Big 3 have at best 2 seasons of top quality ball and maybe not even that.

I think age and a resurgent East will be too much for the aged Celtics. But never count out a team with this much talent.

A healthy Gilbert Arenas and an upgraded roster across the board make the Washington Wizards a real threat in the NBA East.

Three years ago, Gilbert Arenas was playing as well as anyone in the NBA. Though never rewarded as an MVP, he was on the short list of best players in the NBA and an NBA All-Star. Injuries and knee surgery derailed his surging career.

But new Washington Wizards coach, Flip Saunders, seems to think Arenas is back to full strength. Read his comments, as reported by Yahoo! Sports:

I don’t see any difference as far as the things that he does now that he was doing three years ago, when he was one of the MVP candidates

That is a scary proposition for the rest of the NBA East, even if you consider that the Wizards were embarrassing last year. After Eddie Jordan was fired 11 games into the season, injuries & inconsistent play sent this team spiraling to the bottom-depths of the NBA. But in the last 6 months, the Wizards have significantly upgraded a roster that produced a franchise-low 19 wins last season. Some of it has to do with players returning from injuries — notably Arenas but DeShawn Stevenson & Brendan Haywood were injured much of last season also.

When you factor in a lineup that includes three former NBA All-Stars — Gilbert Arenas, Caron Butler, Antawn Jamison — and solid NBA players like Fabricio Oberto, Mike Miller, and Randy Foye, I think this team should be disappointed if they don’t win 45 games. If the Wizards stay healthy (a big IF with this franchise), I could see them challenging for the 4th spot in the NBA East.

Flip Saunders has said he is scrapping the Princeton offense and opening up the offense. This is only good news for Arenas. Expect this athletic team to run more and score in transition. If they can get some defensive presence from Haywood & Andre Blatche, I think they will make some noise.

Curious about The Jump Manual? I'll tell you what's inside! Take a look at the secret contents of The Jump Manual.

Want to know more about The Jump Manual? Let me shed some light on why this vertical jump program is not like the other jump programs on the market. Yes, it has jump exercises. Yes, you need to work hard to achieve results. However, you might be surprised with Jacob’s #1 tip (in my words):

Train for endurance, and you will be able to jump longer. But train for explosion and you will be able to jump higher!

What does this mean in practical terms for jumping exercises. Simply put, you need to give maximum effort on every exercises. If you are coasting or not giving your all on every rep, then you will not gaining the needed vertical blast. In a basketball game, if you want to jump higher, you need explosion. By training with maximum effort on every jumping exercise rep, you will be developing muscles to explode — maximize your vertical.

Most training programs offer cookie-cutter workout charts that tell you to do squats, leg lifts, etc. What they don’t tell you is that you should only be doing as many reps as you can do at maximum intensity. While many jump exercises can be done without weights, adding weights can make the exercise harder — thereby increasing your ability to give maximum effort.

A good example of how this max effort – max reward process works is to examine the training of a sprinter. Rather than running 6 miles in practice, sprinters train by sprinting — running short distances at maximum intensity. This trains their “fast twitch” muscles to explode. The same training principle should be applied to jumping exercises if you goal is to increase your vertical.

Hope these tips help you increase your vertical leap. I used The Jump Manual’s principles to gain 6 inches in 3 weeks.

Ricky Rubio, the teenage basketball sensation, might not be coming to the NBA this seasons. Rumors have him going to Real Barcelona. But is that so bad for the Timberwolves?

Ricky Rubio has all the promise of the next great NBA point guard. Blessed with silky smooth moves and a flair that matches Spain itself, Rubio took the world by storm at the Olympic Games last year. Depending on who you talk to, he is the next Steve Nash or Pete Maravich.

A little background on Ricky Rubio:

Rubio debuted in the Spanish ACB League in the 2005-06 season with DKV Joventut. He won the FIBA EuroCup championship with Joventut that year. He led the Spanish ACB League in steals during the 2006-07 season. He also won the Spanish ACB League’s Rising Star Award that season. Rubio was also named the 2007 and 2008 FIBA Europe Young Player of the Year

Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ricky_Rubio

His success against the US (and other teams), made him a hot commodity in this year’s NBA draft. However, he has a sizable buyout clause from his current team, DKV Joventut, raising flags for some NBA teams. The Minnesota Timberwolves took the gamble and made Rubio the 5th pick in the 2009 Draft, knowing there would be some work to do.

Try to negotiate a buyout

Try to convince Rubio to move from sunny Spain to minus-temperature Minnesota

Have a backup plan in place

So far, the T-Wolves have made little progress on #1. The NBA has clear rules for buyouts in the NBA collective bargaining. No more than $500,000 can be paid by any team to buy out a player’s contract. T-Wolves’ GM, David Kahn, has been to Spain twice this summer trying to broker deals. So far…nothing.

As of today, nothing has happened. Even if a buyout is reached, there still remains a question as to whether Rubio wants to play in Minnesota (#2). I think this is a non-issue, my self. Given the travel schedules of the NBA, you can live wherever you want. Lots of NBA guys have houses in other cities. To address #3, the T-Wolves drafted Johnny Flynn and Ty Lawson, two of the top point guards in the NCAA this year. For now, it looks like it is their team.

So where does this leave Minnesota? I think the best case scenario is Rubio signs a deal in Spain with a more favorable buyout. He plays there for two years, matures (he’s only 18!), and comes to the NBA ready to contribute. The list of washed out, young European imports is large. And while Spaniards have been enjoying far more success recently, most the the imports arrived in their 20s.

Regardless of what happens, Minnesota can take comfort in the fact that they maintain the draft rights and have a solid backup plan in place. Two years from now, if Rubio arrives with a greater skill-set, we may look back and say all this struggle was worth it.

Allen Iverson has gone from starting All-Star to unemployed in less than one season. Does anyone know The Answer anymore?

How is it possible that a first-ballot Hall-of-Famer and potentially the most athletic sub 6-footer in the history of the NBA can’t get a job? Has the NBA changed that much that a one-time scoring champ and a guy that averaged 20+ points just 1 season ago is unwelcome on any team?

If you ask Allen Iverson about his off-season, the “Answer” is YES!

So what happened from to The Answer in 1 season that makes him kryptonite to NBA GMs. Most will tell you it is chemistry. His foray in the Motor City did little to impress, as Iverson was unable to adjust to a smaller role. GMs want no part of a high-profile role-player if he doesn’t want to put the team first. Look at what “stars” have done for the LA Lakers with Lamar Odom coming off the bench; or the Boston Celtics’ Big Three sacrificing their individual numbers for team wins. If Iverson wants to succeed, he will have to adjust.

I feel for Allen Iverson. Regardless of what is written about him, he has the heart of a warrior. On the basketball court, few players have given more to their team. He single-handedly took a week Sixers team to the NBA Finals. And he actually won a game, unlike LeBron. For a man that stands less than 6 feet in a world of 6′8″ point guards, that is an accomplishment. And I believe he is actually a very giving man off the court. Do a quick search on YouTube and you’ll see that he cares about a lot more than just his own well being.

Iverson will likely power the Charlotte Bobcats’ anemic offense for you year and help Larry Brown bring his roster up to snuff. After that, he needs to think about his future in the NBA…or he won’t be the Answer anymore.

How quickly the mighty have fallen. Like the auto companies, Detroit Pistons basketball has gone from a model of efficiency to a barren wasteland. The exodus of aging stars will help their salary cap, but new additions Ben Gordon & Charlie Villanueva will not add wins.

Remember when you could write-in the Detroit Pistons to the Eastern Conference Finals? That was just a few short years back. The nucleus of Chauncey Billups, Rip Hamilton, Tayshaun Prince, Rasheed Wallace, and Antonio McDyees (and one-time All-Star Ben Wallace) made the rough-and-tough Pistons a force in the East. But now, the team has gone in a different direction.

Ben Wallace didn’t feel the love and left for Chicago in 2006. The Pistons held it together as guys like McDyees & Jason Maxiell stepped it up. But desperation (and the beginning of a rebuilding effort) was apparent when team president, Joe Dumars, traded Chauncey Billups for Allen Iverson. The move was “supposed” to be for salary cap purposes. Iverson would hang for a year, then be released to free up cap-space for the 2010 bonanza. The unintended effect was that Chauncey was the glue that held the Piston’s ship together. Iverson was an unmitigated disaster and Chauncey spearheaded a revival in Denver.

The Pistons finally got active in the free agent market and made big headlines by signing to UConn guys to giant contracts: Ben Gordon & Charlie Villanueva. Both guys are very good NBA players, but neither is a lead guy. Both guys love to shoot but would rather run laps than get a rebound. They added a nice (if soft) player in Austin Daye through the draft, but could have leveraged more if it weren’t for a few trades. The Pistons took a great shooter, Chase Budinger, in a 2nd round swoop then sent him off quietly to Houston for a bag of peanuts. They traded the disappointing Amir Johnson to Milwaukee for the Argentine champion Francisco Oberto…then promptly released him.

So where are the Piston’s now? They have little front-court presence as McDyees left town for the San Antonio Spurs and Rasheed Wallace signed with the Boston Celtics (note: they are likely to meet each other in the Finals, while Detroit would need to buy tickets just to make the first round. Hold overs Kwame Brown and new-signing Chris Wilcox will do little to fill that void. Rip Hamilton & Tayshaun Prince are still manning the fort as are Jason Maxiell and Rodney Stuckey. But trying to slot in the high-priced Villanueva and Gordon will not prove that easy.

If you believe in playing your best 5 guys together, the starting lineup for Detroit would be:

PG: Rodney Stuckey

SG: Ben Gordon

SG: Rip Hamilton

SF: Tayshaun Prince

PF: Charlie Villanueva

Notice there is no center! So slide everyone down a position and you have the small-ball express. Problem is, Stuckey might not be the guy to run this offense. And the Piston’s don’t have any guys who can take it to the rim…or defend (outside of Prince).

The Pistons, like it or not, are in rebuilding limbo. They have committed too much money to stars that aren’t really stars. And any cap space they have next year will likely not net any big name guys. I know they targeted Boozer and Bosh, both of whom would work well with this lineup. But do those guys really want to sign with Detroit?

Joe Dumars made a living in the first have of this decade by putting together great teams. Like other corporate execs, he has his work cut out for him…and the government won’t bail him out!

Leon Powe fell into the lap of the Cleveland Cavaliers. He'll join other 2009 pickups -- Shaq, Anthony Parker, and Jamario Moon -- on a much-improved Cavs team.

Leon Powe was released by the Boston Celtics…and fell in the lap of the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Yahoo! Sports reports:

Powe signed a two-year deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday, even though he isn’t expected back on the court until sometime around the All-Star break. The Cavaliers are paying Powe the league minimum for a three-year veteran.

Reuniting with old AAU teammate, LeBron James, is certainly attractive to Leon. Staying in the Eastern Conference means he gets to show the Celtics what they passed on. Powe is still recovering from ACL surgery and not expected back until February of next year.

There is some risk on the part of the Cavs as they must wait for Powe’s full recovery. But the upside is certainly there. Powe torched the Cavs in two games last year, and was a very effective player for the Celtics during their Championship run. And to get him for the league minimum is akin to stealing.

Put Powe in the mix with other off-season acquisitions — Shaq, Anthony Parker, and Jamario Moon — and you have the makings of a real contender. The Cavs faded on offense but now have a terrific low-post presence in Shaq and a great 3-point shooter in Parker. The signings of Moon and Powe give defensive intensity, hustle, and bench depth.

The race for Eastern Conference supremacy just got tighter…and the Celtics might have gifted the Cavs a secret weapon.
